Restoring a Piece of Sydney's Story
When the restoration of Sydney's Queen Victoria Building commenced in 1986, it wasn't simply about replacing worn finishes. It was about respecting one of Australia's most significant heritage buildings and ensuring its story could continue for generations to come.
The original tessellated floors had welcomed millions of footsteps over the decades. Rich in colour, intricate in pattern and unmistakably Victorian in character, they formed an essential part of the building's identity. Recreating them demanded more than technical accuracy, it required an understanding of the craftsmanship that made them extraordinary in the first place.
Working alongside master Japanese tile makers, BetterTiles supplied and installed handcrafted mosaic tiles throughout the building, meticulously reconstructing the original tessellated floor designs while delivering the durability required for one of Sydney's busiest public spaces. Every colour was considered, every pattern carefully matched, every piece placed with respect for the building's history, the result wasn't an imitation, but a continuation.
A restoration that honoured the original architecture while ensuring the floors could withstand the demands of modern life without losing the character that made them so memorable.
Nearly four decades later, those same floors continue to welcome visitors from around the world. Most people walk across them without a second thought. Yet that's often the mark of the best restoration work, when it's done well, it feels as though nothing has changed at all.
