BetterTiles is proud to have supplied premium terrazzo for the Sydney Metro upgrade of Central Station — a project led by Transport for NSW, Sydney Metro, Woods Bagot, and Laing O’Rourke. Our scope included high-performance terrazzo across the Grand Concourse, Suburban Platforms, Intercity Platforms and the North–South Concourse.
But this wasn’t just about durability and compliance. It was about turning a high-traffic space into something intentional, intuitive and inspiring.
At the heart of the station lies a 113m x 19m in-situ terrazzo floor artwork — a striking design feature that doubles as a guiding path for commuters and a quiet moment of reflection. Inlaid throughout the surface are meditative cues like “Simply breathe naturally” and “Stay focused when everything moves around you.”
This tactile, grounding element brings a sense of rhythm to the pace of everyday travel — helping millions navigate not just the station, but the moment they’re in.
The result is a civic space that feels as considered as it is connected — engineered for durability, but designed for presence.
“Good design doesn’t just move people. It grounds them.” It’s not only about sparking awe or admiration — it’s about creating a quiet anchor in a restless world. A space that lets people breathe a little deeper, stand a little taller, and feel a sense of belonging. The best design isn’t fleeting; it lingers. It becomes part of how someone experiences themselves in a place, turning walls, textures, and tones into something deeply personal and profoundly human.
